Sustainable Landscaping
- Eco-lawns require less maintenence and water while providing the features of a traditional lawn; sitting, strolling and playing. Research by Tom Cook at Oregon State University in Corvallis led to the concept of the "eco-lawn," a mixture of grasses, flowers, and herbs that stands up well to mowing. The Wildflower Farm has over 13 different mixes to choose from. Hobbs & Hopkins in Portland have 5 mixes appropriate for the Pacific Northwest and can advise on the best choice.
- Permeable paving for stormwater.
- Hardy plants. We are especially fond of Rhododendrons because Mary Ann's grandfather was a famous hybridizer and founded Whitney Gardens on the Hood Canal.
